The Winner of Metro Global Photo Challenge 2008

midnight tram to humber

MDelogu"Midnight Tram to Humber has a sense of eternity to it. I see it almost like a short novel in picture format - the kind of picture that could spark a love story. I found it evocative and straightforward. It’s an image that doesn’t want to attract you, but which you cannot help being attracted to."
Marco Delogu
PKelly"Deserving winner - strong composition, great mix of light and a mood that echoes a 'Gorillas-in-the-mist' jungle dawn scene. An accomplished piece of work that draws well on the outer boundaries of the 'Urban Jungle' brief."
Paul Kelly
PWearing"The global winner "Midnight Tram to Humber" jumped off my screen the first time I saw it; it's haunting, mysterious and edgy. Not surprising , the image received high praise from the voting public."
Paul Wearing

The Global Jury about their experience

MDelogu"[the competition was a tough challenge]... and it became a challenge for me as chairman, as the final decision-making was a difficult task. Some of the pictures really made me think and reflect about things and will remain in my memory for a very long time."

PKelly"The Metro photo-challenge 2008 was a pleasure to judge. It is great to see so many people out recording what they see on a day to day basis. A famous photographer once said that he takes a picture every day, just for practice. One day the photograph is a lucrative commission the next day its purely for the joy of honing his skills. The key, like any passion is practice - to keep looking, keep seeing and most importantly to keep recording what you see so as to share it with the rest of us."
Paul Kelly / Dublin
PWearing"It was a privilege to be Canada's member on the Global Jury of the Metro Photo Challenge 2008 competition. The response to the competition was awesome, attracting 55,000 entries. The "Urban Jungle" theme inspired some very clever compositions. I was impressed with imagination of all the shooters and quality of the images entered."
Paul Wearing / Toronto
UBradhe"To be one of the jury members of this enormous photo challenge has been a big honour! The winning pictures are really high class. The competing pictures seem to get better and better every year. I've been a jury member in several "Picture of the year" contests with only professional photographers competing, the MPC-winners seems to get closer and closer to that high level."

"The warm tones and light effects (once used to great effect in a 1950's portrait of Picasso by Gjon Mili )show a planned thoughtfulness and proficiency of execution that deserves commendation."
"A technically sound photograph. The warm amber tones evokes a dreamlike state capitulated by the sparkle stream flowing around the lonesome figure in the centre of the shot."

"Fantastic photo juxtposing the man made with the natural. The dark, hard lines of the factory compared to the round dandelions and the whispy clouds compared the the dark billowey plumes of smoke make for a dynamic photo."

"Genius is in simplicity. This 'pared back' image consists of a deeply captivating portrait against a beautiful palette of muted pastel colours. The composition is so strong that to be asked to crop the image in any way would lead to great difficulty. The relation to brief is subtle but asks the hugely pertinent question -in this urban jungle where do the injured or the weak go? This is a thoughtful photographer and one to watch."
"This is a fantastic photo. Well lit and perfectly framed, the image harkens the viewer into different world. The cold stare of the gentleman gives the viewer a brief glimpse into the stories that reside behind his eyes."
